The Ole Swimmin’ Hole

Nestled in the Irish Hills of Michigan, there lies the remnants of the middle classes’ recreation hey-day, with dozens of abandoned theme parks and attractions. Here is the pool at the bottom of the “Irish Hills Fun Center”’s water slide. I’d heed the warning about no diving, that water looks more than a little toxic. In fact, it’s easy to imagine this place as the center piece of a post apocalyptic scene, with water-logged zombies about to rise out of the slime.

Woolly Mammoth Hunt

From the Prehistoric Forest, another of the abandoned attractions in the Irish Hills of Michigan. Access to the whole forest is restricted, but several dilapidated effigies remain in view from the parking lot. This image is of the mighty Mammoth which only recently lost her tusks. The sight stirs the hindbrain to launch into a hunt with stone spears and throwing axes to provide food for the winter. (Michigan is more well known for Mastodons - what’s the difference? see http://bit.ly/1ZTjgkd). I plan on sneaking back in one day to see the other wonders still hidden deep in the primeval forest canopy.

Silk Bobbin Box

This bobbin box was one of the items left behind at the Lonaconing silk mill. This wonderful location is photographer’s dream tour and the last intact silk mill in the US. Read more about it and how to preserve it at the Explorgrapher (http://bit.ly/1QcUEel)
